The western edge of North Austin is primarily a business and industrial district while to the east are neighborhoods of older homes and apartments. Homes in these mostly modest family-style neighborhoods were built from 1960-1980. Some parts of the area are not as well maintained as others. Standard shopping amenities are generally available to residents near the Lamar Blvd. and Research Blvd. corridors. The extensive shopping, dining and entertainment options of the Arboretum area are nearby. This area, bound by three major arteries, has a good grid of access routes that facilitates relatively expeditious travel. Employing over 6,500, IBM is situated along the western edge of the area. This is one of IBM's largest complexes. North Austin is home to skilled workers, professionals and their families along with a mix of singles and students. Children in North Austin attend schools in the Austin Independent School District.
