The number of buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places earned Bastrop the title "Most Historic Small Town in Texas". The neighborhoods surrounding the downtown area are home to over 130 historical sites. One of the oldest opera houses in the state, the Bastrop Opera House, has served the community for the last 107 years. A few of the movies filmed in Bastrop include: Courage Under Fire, Home Fries, and Little Boy Blue. Bastrop is a growing community with a wide range of activities. Located just a few miles away is the beautiful 3500 acre Bastrop State Park where visitors enjoy backpacking, camping, picnicking, canoeing, swimming, golfing, wildlife viewing, and hiking. There are three 18 hole golf courses within just a few miles of downtown: ColoVista Country Club, Lost Pines Golf Course Bastrop State Park, and Pine Forest Golf Club. The city also hosts rodeos, festivals, art shows, and golf tournaments. There are a few large, established retailers nearby: Super Wal-Mart, Super HEB Grocery Store, and Home Depot in addition to a variety of unique local businesses. With the rapid growth that has occurred along the Highway 71 corridor and the establishment of the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport 20 minutes away, the city is poised for more growth. Children living in this area attend schools in the Bastrop Independent School District.
